Choosing the Right Brass Grade

Brass Machining Tolerances & Specifications

  • C360 Free-Cutting Brass

Best for machinability. C360 offers excellent cutting performance and is ideal for precision turned parts, fittings, connectors, bushings, fasteners, and high-volume Swiss machining.

  • C260 Cartridge Brass

Best for general-purpose applications. C260 combines good corrosion resistance, ductility, and formability for electrical components, hardware, fittings, and decorative parts.

  • C464 Naval Brass

Best for marine environments. C464 provides improved corrosion resistance and is commonly selected for fittings, shafts, fasteners, and components exposed to moisture or seawater.

  • Quick Guide

Choose C360 when machining efficiency is the priority, C260 for versatile general-purpose parts, and C464 for improved corrosion resistance in marine applications.

Brass Machining Advantages & Considerations

Brass is one of the most machinable metal materials for CNC production, offering excellent cutting performance, dimensional stability, and surface quality. Its material properties make it especially suitable for precision turning, Swiss machining, threaded components, and repeat production.

  • +
    -
    Excellent Machinability
Free-cutting brass grades such as C360 can be machined at relatively high cutting speeds with low cutting resistance. This helps reduce cycle time, improve productivity, and support efficient production of both simple and complex precision parts.
  • +
    -
    Good Dimensional Stability
Brass generally machines with good dimensional consistency and low distortion compared with many tougher alloys. This makes it suitable for precision components, close-fitting assemblies, threaded features, and parts requiring repeatable dimensions across production batches.
  • +
    -
    Clean Surface Finish

Brass can achieve smooth, clean machined surfaces with well-defined edges and fine detail. In many applications, parts can be used directly after machining or require only minimal secondary finishing.

  • +
    -
    Efficient Turning & Swiss Machining

Brass is particularly well suited for CNC turning and Swiss machining. Small shafts, pins, connectors, fittings, bushings, terminals, and threaded components can be produced efficiently with good repeatability and short cycle times.

  • +
    -
    Burr & Edge Control
Although brass generally produces clean chips, small burrs can still form around holes, threads, cross-holes, and sharp edges. Tool selection, cutting strategy, and controlled deburring help maintain clean finished features.
  • +
    -
    Alloy Selection Matters

Different brass grades vary in machinability, corrosion resistance, strength, formability, and lead content. Selecting the appropriate alloy helps balance machining efficiency, part performance, regulatory requirements, and overall manufacturing cost.

Surface Finishes for Brass Parts

Brass can achieve excellent surface quality directly from CNC machining and also responds well to polishing, brushing, plating, and decorative finishing. The appropriate finish depends on appearance, corrosion resistance, conductivity, wear requirements, and the final application.
  • CNC machined brass typically has a clean metallic surface with visible machining marks. It is suitable for many functional parts where additional cosmetic or protective finishing is not required.
  • Polishing improves surface smoothness and creates a brighter, more reflective appearance. It is commonly used for decorative parts, fittings, hardware, and components where appearance is important.

  • Brushing produces a uniform directional satin finish and helps reduce the visibility of machining marks. It is often selected for visible brass components and decorative hardware.

  • Bead blasting creates a consistent matte or satin surface. It can be used when a low-reflective, uniform appearance is preferred before final finishing or coating.
  • Nickel and chrome plating can improve surface appearance, corrosion resistance, and wear performance. These finishes are commonly used for connectors, fittings, hardware, and decorative brass components.
  • Tin plating is often used for brass electrical components and connectors where conductivity, solderability, or surface protection is important.
  • Clear protective coatings or lacquer can help slow oxidation and preserve the natural appearance of polished or decorative brass surfaces.
  • Additional plating, polishing, marking, deburring, or decorative finishes can be arranged based on drawing requirements and end-use conditions.

Quality Control & Inspection for Brass Parts

Brass parts are often used in precision assemblies, connectors, fittings, valves, and threaded components where dimensional consistency is critical. We follow a structured inspection process to verify material, critical dimensions, functional features, and drawing requirements throughout production.
